چکیده

Iron is an essential trace metal in the human diet due to its obligate role in a number of metabolic processes. In the diet, iron is present in a number of different forms, generally described as haem (from haemoglobin and myoglobin in animal tissue) and non-haem iron (including ferric oxides and salts, ferritin and lactoferrin). This review describes the molecular mechanisms that co-ordinate the absorption of iron from the diet and its release into the circulation. While many components of the iron transport pathway have been elucidated, a number of key issues still remain to be resolved. Future work in this area will provide a clearer picture regarding the transcellular fl ux of iron and its regulation by dietary and humoral factors. © 2007 WJG. All rights reserved.

INTESTINAL ZINC ABSORPTION IN DESFERROXAMINE-TREATED RATS

Desferroxamine (Desferal) is used tochelate iron in thalassemia, a disease of very high prevalence in various parts of lran. We have investigated intestinal zinc absorption in Desferal-treated rats which, in pilot experiments, showed low serum levels of both iron and zinc. Intraperitoneal administration of ten 0.5 g doses of Desferal (one injection every other day) to male rats produced sev...

Systemic regulation of intestinal iron absorption.

The intestinal absorption of the essential trace element iron and its mobilization from storage sites in the body are controlled by systemic signals that reflect tissue iron requirements. Recent advances have indicated that the liver-derived peptide hepcidin plays a central role in this process by repressing iron release from intestinal enterocytes, macrophages and other body cells. When iron r...

Iron supplementation during infancy--effects on expression of iron transporters, iron absorption, and iron utilization in rat pups.

BACKGROUND Studies conducted in human infants suggest developmental changes in the regulation of iron absorption; however, little is known about the molecular mechanisms regulating iron absorption during infancy. Two intestinal iron transporters, divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) and ferroportin 1 (FPN1), were recently identified. OBJECTIVE The objective was to investigate at a molecular le...

Cadmium Transport in a Model of Neonatal Intestinal Cells Correlates to MRP1 and Not DMT1 or FPN1

Newborns have a higher gastrointestinal uptake of cadmium than adults. In adults, the iron transporters DMT1 and FPN1 are involved in the intestinal absorption of cadmium, while in neonates, the mechanisms for cadmium absorption are unknown. We have investigated possible cadmium transporters in the neonatal intestine by applying a model of immature human intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cells. To m...
